Congratulations to Goreti Lopez on her amazing "Transformation Season" Exhibition that features her wearable metal pieces inspired by nature during the Appalachian spring. This exhibition is composed of eight copper metal artworks that combine the use of enamel in addition to different metalsmithing techniques.
Her work is part of the Spring 2023 BFA Senior Exhibition in the Reece Museum at ETSU in Johnson City, TN and is presented by Reece Museum, ETSU's Department of Art & Design, and Slocumb Galleries. Exhibition runs through April 28, 2023. Go support local art and see this amazing work!!
Artist Statement
"As an artist, I design wearable and sculptural pieces to highlight the different signs of nature. Taking a moment to appreciate plants starting to grow, form, and show their colors is something that I have done since childhood. Automatically, I grab my sketchbook and begin creating designs that reflect aspects of Spring. Transformation Season is a project inspired by spring, the season of new beginnings where nature comes back to life, reinvigorating itself after the cold winter months.
Once the weather grows warmer, hibernating animals and insects awaken, rousing from their long winter dormancy. It is a season when pollinators demonstrate their importance, helping plants like wildflowers and vegetables to reproduce. It is also a reminder that after a harsh season, there will appear something brighter and more beautiful.
My work is primarily created using copper and kiln-fired enamel. I incorporate warm enamel colors into the work to express feelings of joy and other emotions. Pollinators in Flower Fields depicts butterflies on abstracted flowers to illustrate the relationship between insects and the season. Another piece, Flourishing, is a copper neckpiece reflecting the growth of new leaves.
Making work has led to much self-exploration. This has come with times of intense doubt, leading to periods of creativity, much like the intense winters that often come before the spring. I use imagery such as organic forms to illustrate a connection between humans and the natural world. I place pieces on the body to emphasize this relationship while combining forms and textures to express nature’s beauty." - Goreti Lopez
